Adventure Travel From Grand Canyon Rafting to Base Jumping

Some people believe a break from work should involve more than just a holiday: it should be an adventure! Which is why adventure travel is becoming so popular. It doesn’t have to mean climbing Everest, attempting K2, or crossing a desert on the back of a camel: but it can, though it can just as easily mean a guided rafting trip in the Grand Canyon, seeing the desert from the basket of a balloon, a bungee jump like James Bond (off Switzerland’s Verzasca Dam) or a road trip somewhere literally *off the beaten track*.

Trekking in Nepal or paddling the Grand Canyon are the classic adventure travel options, and for most adventure travellers involve a bit of travel to get to, but there are travel adventure options in every country — you ‘d be surprised to see the list of where all the best paragliding destinations are, and paragliding definitely qualifies as adventure travel if it’s done right. Ice climbing, cave diving, shark diving, paddling between scenic islands, trekking overland, base jumping, or even heli-biking or heli-skiing can elevate your travels to adventure travels, and these kinds of adventure travel options can be found in some very unlikely destinations.

But the classic adventure options are still the best: New Zealand, for all the cycling and paddling options, as well as the extreme sports, is one of the best places for adventure travel, and Chile and Patagonia are popular for the same kinds of adventure travel attractions. Canada has the winter-y wilderness, and offers adventure travellers the chance to get back to nature and meet some exotic animals, while Borneo and the Galapagos, offer adventure travellers both untouched wilderness, unique animals and sunshine. Just in case you prefer your adventure travels without the adventurous weather.

Not all of us get the chance to have a real travel adventure. However, ‘adventure holidays’ are becoming ever more popular, and accessible, and not just among the young. As baby boomers mature they find they are fitter, and generally richer, than their parents were – so your 50s and 60s is a great time to take that travel adventure you never had time or money to do. Lots of adventure travel is within the realms of possibility for most people — you don’t have to be an elite athlete to cross the Sahara with a camel train, just relatively healthy and the owner of an adventurous spirit. Some adventure travel tour operators even run adventure tour options for younger explorers, and there are some gentle routes along even some of the most exciting of white water rivers, and child size mountains still worth conquering. And while once people thought of some adventure travel options as being the adventure of a life time, now a lifetime can have many travelling adventures.

What is the Aviation Adventure Industry?

When a unique product or service is found to be marketable, it soon goes from being offered by one company to being offered by numerous companies, spawning an “industry”. Often, an industry results from a product or service’s fulfillment of a need; however, industries can also result from products and services that fulfill our wants and dreams, such as our desire for great adventure, an example of which can be seen in the aviation adventure industry.

The aviation adventure industry is composed of companies that offer trained and untrained pilots the opportunity to pilot a real military fighter plane. However, most of the industry’s clientele don’t possess previous flight experience. Yes, that’s right; you don’t even need to possess a pilot’s license to pilot a fighter plane while performing an array of aerobatic flight maneuvers. While this might sound dangerous and illegal, it’s actually quite safe and above board. When you embark your adventure flight, an experienced fighter pilot will fly with you as your copilot. Due to planes’ dual controls, the fighter pilot can take control of the aircraft whenever necessary.

Some companies in the aviation adventure industry specialize in adventure flights. But there are others that draw half of their business from flight adventures and the other half from offering professional pilots extensive safety training. Therefore, if you’re looking for the ultimate confirmation of safety, you can go with a company whose pilots specialize in recovering from a variety of uncontrolled flight patterns. Statistically, there’s a greater chance that you’ll experience ground impact while flying on an airliner than while taking an adventure flight with a trained fighter pilot. Unlike other pilots, fighter pilots are inherently equipped to resolve unusual flight situations on a regular basis.

Most companies in the aviation adventure industry offer two kinds of flight adventures: adventures that simulate air shows and adventures that simulate air combat. When you choose an air show adventure, you’ll perform or have the pilot perform for you the same maneuvers that you see in air shows around the world, including loops, hammerheads, cuban eights, tail slides, torque rolls, accelerated flat spins, outside loops, inverted spins, lomcevaks, knife-edge spins and tumbles. And when you choose a military adventure, you’ll aim a real gun sight at adversary aircraft, firing simulated bullets to the sound of real gunfire. In addition, you can participate in war games while executing a variety of tactical flight maneuvers, including high-speed low altitude flybys.

Aviation adventures appeal to a broad variety of people who have one thing in common: the desire to experience the adventure of a lifetime. To take an adventure flight all you have to prove is that is 6’6″ or shorter, weigh 240 or less pounds and are without serious heath conditions that could be worsened by vigorous flight. If you meet these criteria and you’ve been dreaming of a supreme adventure, the aviation adventure industry is waiting to offer you an adventure that’s literally out of this world.

20 Tips for Your Next Adventure Trip

Adventure Travel can be one of the most exciting and exhilarating ways to travel and see the world. It is full of new palces and cultures and allows you to really immerse yourself in the cultures and communities you visit.

Here are 20 tips for planning your next adventure trip:

    1. Use the Internet to get information from travel guides; read travel blogs about the places you want to go; chat with travelers who have recently returned from an adventure trip; consult with local authorities; check what travel documents and visas are necessary and book flights and accommodations.

    1. Plan your route carefully making use of reliable maps. Use terrain maps showing elevation, water crossings, mountains etc. Include in your route where you are going to sleep, plan the distance you want to cover in a day and how long will it take to get from resting point to resting point.

    1. Make sure you have money in the local currency as most adventure trips are off the beaten track where Traveler’s Checks or foreign currency will not be accepted. Take some smaller denominations for tips, baksheesh and the occasional bribe!

    1. Get your papers in order including detailed maps, passports, visas, insurance policy, camping or other permits. Carry with you photocopies of your passport and I.D. Don’t forget to take a list of any medical information (allergies, blood type) in case of emergency.

    1. When choosing your adventure destination consider parts of the world that are endangered and unlikely to be around much longer, like Greenland’s Icebergs or areas with endangered species. See them while they still exist.

    1. Perhaps one of the most important items for survival is water. Plan to take water and to know where to find water sources along your route.

    1. Allow for emergency exits, places where you can ditch the trip if something goes wrong. Plan for at least two potential exit points each day where there is access to transport, means of communication or other contact with the world at large.

    1. Plan the food for your adventure trip, consider how much you can carry, what food will last longest, will you have access to places to buy food along the way and how will you prepare the food. Choose foods by how easy they will be to carry and prepare.

    1. Pack light, although you need to pack for all events – wet and dry weather etc. Keep clothes to a minimum, in most cases you can wash some clothing along the route or live in the same jeans for a week!

    1. The necessary equipment for an adventure trip can be expensive but you can buy second-hand, rent or borrow all kinds of specialty equipment and climate specific clothing.

    1. Always pack emergency items like flares, thermal silver blankets and a first aid kit. Check which emergency drugs might become essential for treating animal and insect bites.

    1. Get fit before you go on your adventure trip, there is nothing worse than not being able to keep up or having to miss out on an activity because you are unfit.

    1. Take a solar charger for your mobile phone. These chargers also work for camera batteries and can be purchased online. If you know there won’t be service for your phone, consider using a satellite phone, they can be a life saver in an emergency.

    1. How long you spend on your trip depends on how long you can get away from the “real” world. Calculate the travel time to and from your destination as this takes a chunk out of your trip.

    1. Go on an adventure trip with someone you get along with and someone of similar fitness level so you are not kept back by others. Consider hooking up with a club or taking a group adventure trip with people who have similar interests.

    1. If it is your first adventure trip then consider going with an organized group with a guide. Independent travelers might also choose to incorporate an organized activity into their adventure trip.

    1. Consider taking fast transportation to get you to the focal points of your trip. Spend time on what is really important and not on getting from point A to point B.

    1. Integrate adventurous activities into your adventure trip. On a trip into the desert be sure to share a night with the Bedouin; in the wilderness include water rafting or in Lapland try ice fishing.

    1. On an adventure trip try to disconnect from electronic gadgets as much as possible but have a phone in case of emergencies. Look into using an iPhone or smartphone applications to help you along the way – maps, GPS etc.

  1. Meet the locals and learn about their traditions and way of live. Try to book a home-stay to really get a feel of the local culture.

Most importantly live life to the fullest, take calculated risks and be adventurous.

An Adventure To Remember Ideas For Adventure Travel

The mere thought of adventure holidays itself is enough to send me into a frenzy of excitement. I love travelling and exploring new places is something that I absolutely love doing. Adventure travel destinations have a rugged charm which beats anything that a fancy five star hotel has to offer. Being amidst nature, in the great outdoors, doing what you love doing, makes life worth living.

So what should one do on an adventure vacation? There are a number of exotic adventure activities that one can embark on, to satisfy one’s appetite for adventure.
Hiking:

This is one of the most basic adventure activities and something that most people have already done. But be sure to be armed with the right hiking boots and safety gear. You don’t want to end up hurt or worse, in pain, throughout your little adventure vacation!

There are various hiking organizations which take people to different adventure travel destinations. The best part is you’ll be entirely safe throughout your vacation under the watchful eye of your instructor, who will guide you through the entire process.

Water Sports

Love the beach? Love Adventure? The best way to combine these two is to go to a beach and indulge in a variety of water sports. Enjoy the sun, sand and a healthy dose of adventure. Enjoy a variety of activities like paragliding, kayaking, jet skiing, rafting, rowing, skinny dipping and a variety of other water sports. There’s nothing like playing with water to indulge your adventurous streak.

Add to that all the conventional water sports like surfing, water skiing, windsurfing, yachting, scuba diving, kite surfing etc and your adventure holidays will be complete and you will have a memorable experience. What is best about water sports is that it can easily be made into a family activity which everyone in your family can enjoy, including the little ones. This is simply because it is so safe. Most beaches and water sports’ companies always have the requisite safety gear.

Rock Climbing:

Love the mountains? Try this adventure sport and experience pure bliss. But this comes with a warning. You are not to perform this activity if you have not had adequate practice; this is one of those adventure sports which come with a warning. If you’re not fit enough or don’t have the best quality safety equipment then this could get ugly and I’m assuming that you would like to get back from your adventure travel destination(s) in one piece!

Try out the adventure specials from different travel agents. You’ll have a whale of a time. But do make sure that you go in for only trusted and reputed travel agents because adventure tourism has a high risk factor, aside from the adrenalin rushes that make it so special.

Adventure Travel Destinations for the Adrenalin Junkie

Love adventure holidays? Well, my friend, if you haven’t already been on one, my advice to you is, pack your bags and get out there as soon as you can! I know I did and I had an amazing time this winter skiing in the Aspen. You may choose to go on your adventure vacation or with your partner or even with your family, there is an exciting range of options, no matter which form of adventure travel you are looking to venture out on!

Family Adventure Travel

It sure is hard to please every member of the family when it comes to going on a vacation, and when it’s an adventure travel destination, then you’re probably indulging in some serious wishful thinking if you believe that you can satisfy every member of your family!

One such exciting adventure vacation, which you can’t go wrong with, is exploring a forest. If you belong to a family with an adventurous streak, then, more often than not, you will find that everyone loves the idea of going on a forest trip. But do be careful about choosing the right forest.

You need to take into account not only the exotic species of flora and fauna in the forest, but also the danger factor. Always choose forests which are less dangerous. Remember, Safety first! Try the New Forest, in southern England and be reminded of Robin Hood while you’re at it! You can try a variety of other places like ski slopes, beaches, deserts, mountains and even unknown, secluded adventure spots. Nothing like exploring a new place with the family!

Luxury Adventure Travel

This form of adventure holiday is for those of you who love all the luxuries of life, along with a healthy dose of adventure. Take the Desert Safari in Dubai for example. This experience combines both adventure and luxury perfectly. Try the evening desert safari which starts in the afternoon and takes you along the desert sands in order to quench your thirst for adventure. This is one of those luxury adventure travel destinations which you just cannot avoid.

Take pictures of the breath taking sunset or decorate yourselves with pretty henna art, sample some of the best cuisine in the world and enjoy unlimited soft drinks and mineral water or even access to the bar. Let’s not forget belly dancing, one of the best known and most exotic dance forms in the world.

Have An Adventure Every Day

Adventure is defined as an “unusual and exciting, typically hazardous experience or activity.” Synonyms are exploit, escapade, deed, feat, experience.

I truly think that an adventure can be less hazardous and just plain fun. There are many types of adventures and there is not a “one size fits all” definition! What do I mean? Read my thoughts about adventures below:

1. An adventure is what you make it!

Going to Walmart can be an adventure. You can choose to see life as a schedule or you can see life as an adventure!

2. Your adventure can be within!

Reading a good book is an adventure that I personally love. If you are ever bored, tired of the TV or it’s raining – grab a GOOD book! If you aren’t sure what would be a good book for you, ask your friends on Facebook or visit your local library. You will find that others love to suggest good books.

My daughters enjoy reading. My youngest told me that she was tired of reading about adventures in books and she was ready to have her OWN adventures! I hope that she does have her own adventures! Look out world for this young lady!

3. Adventures can be taking a risk or facing your fears.

Are you the “adventurous” type who rock climbs, swims with the sharks or loves skydiving? Then you are what most people think of as an adventurer. Being someone who loves to take risks with their body takes a special person whom I admire greatly. I enjoy going on an adventure by traveling, but I’m not the daredevil type.

What about a fear that you have? Are you afraid of public speaking, riding a horse or maybe you are afraid to make a new life for yourself? Fears can be a strong emotional and physical barrier to overcome. Yet, many of you overcome your fears with the help of others, time or by facing your fears head on. Stepping out to face your fears is an adventure!

4. Your adventure can be a life event!

Getting married, moving to a new town, having a baby – all life events that are certainly an adventure! You may not consider life events an adventure because they are “natural” to you or maybe even expected as the next phase of your life.

Many of you are expected to go to college, get married and have a family. Sounds boring when typing about that – but it’s NOT boring! Your life is an adventure!

Starting a new business or changing careers can be exciting, scary and satisfying. Yet, I applaud people who have the courage to take this grand adventure of starting their own business or doing what they love. I

In conclusion, adventures come in all shapes and sizes. Adventures don’t have to be hazardous, they can sometimes be just plain fun. For today, have an adventure! Read a book, face a fear, or maybe climb a rock wall!

However you define an adventure, enjoy your life and enjoy your adventures.

Adventure Travel An Exciting And Enthralling Experience

You often hear people talking about adventure travel and that makes you wonder as to what adventure travel actually is. It is something by which u can add adventure and fun to your life. So before going for an adventure travel, you must know what it is. Adventure travel doesn’t mean that you have to endanger your life for your trip to be called adventurous!

The term adventurous is a concept that is not defined physically when you talk about adventure travel. This concept is defined psychologically. Different people have different definitions of adventure. Earlier adventure travel meant going abroad or just traveling to different places. However, its definition has changed today. Adventure travel is when you experience an event rather than being a mere spectator in your travels. It is actually living in the present and experiencing the place and not just sight seeing.

Adventure is different for everyone. What may appear adventurous to you could be totally boring for someone. And that is reason that there are so many options available if you want to go for adventure travel. You can choose the one which suits you, and more importantly the one which excites you! White water rafting or kayaking can be fun for someone. On the other hand camping in an interesting place can de defined as adventurous by some people. Hot air balloon ride may sound boring to you but it can be the perfect adventure travel for some.

Adventure travel is when you get yourself involved in an enthralling experience. It includes boating, kayaking, hiking, sky diving, mountain climbing, scuba diving, sailing, bicycling and much more! You should not indulge yourself into any form of adventure travel in which you are not comfortable. The level of risk in your travel is defined by you just like term adventure is defined individually. Adventure travel is getting yourself engaged into a new experience but make sure that you are totally comfortable in what you are doing.

You can choose a tour if you wish to go for adventure travel. Such adventure travel tours are available for couples and families. But don’t worry in case you are single, adventure tours are also available for you. So you can make a plan for an adventure tour. You can choose a tour which suits you best. These tours usually have two groups of people. One group goes on sight seeing and visits their areas of interest, whereas the other group involves itself in adventurous activities. Of course the type of activity depends on the tour which you have selected.

It is a misconception that adventure travel is only for the younger people. You can indulge yourself into it irrespective of your age. Adventure travel is enjoyed by one and all. It’s not uncommon to see an old couple getting engaged in adventurous activities. Having worked hard throughout their life, they want o experience something new and enthralling. You can meet people from all quarters of life in adventure travel. Now, meeting different people from different backgrounds can itself be very adventurous!

You can choose an adventure travel which excites you. It can simply be going out of the country to some distant place or maybe engaging yourself in bunjee jumping. Whichever activity you choose, just make sure that you are comfortable in it, for there will be no fun and no adventure if you are not comfortable!

10 Adventure Activities Travel Tips

When it comes to adventure travel the destination should be as adventurous as the activities planned. After all most of us can sky dive, scuba dive or bungee jump at locations either local to us or relatively close by. So when you add adventurous destinations to your adventure activities you have created the ultimate adventure experience. Just remember that many of these activities are excluded from your standard travel insurance so a special adventure activities travel insurance policy may be needed to provide for necessary protections.

Here are my recommendations for some of the top adventure destinations that include adventure activities.

Scuba Diving in Myanmar

For the last half century this southeast Asian nation has been closed to outsiders. Now as it begins to open up you still have an opportunity to visit this land with its diverse cultures before the McDonalds, shopping malls and traffic choked highways arrive. The Mergui Archipelago remains relatively untouched by modern society and scuba diving here will allow you to observe pristine coral reefs and magnificent sea life in addition to the cultural wonders of Myanmar before the modern world arrives in full force.

Bungee Jumping off Victoria Falls Bridge, Zambia

At 111 metres above the Zambezi River the Victoria Falls Bridge is considered one of the best bungee jumping platforms in the world. When your heart settles back into your chest, try a walking safari or jet boat up to the base of the fabulous Victoria Falls. Don’t forget to speak to your travel insurance company about the adventure activities you plan on doing while in Zambia to make sure that your adventure activities travel insurance covers you sufficiently.

Go Kite boarding in Fujian, China

While relatively new to China, the sport of Kite Boarding has been adopted by the people of Fujian in a big way. If you’re new to the sport instruction is available. Other great adventures in China include mountain trekking in Tibet’s autonomous region, although proponents of ethical tourism may wish to consider where they stand on this point.

Hot Air Ballooning in Kenya

OK so Kenya isn’t the great adventure it once was; it’s still pretty adventurous. The adrenaline levels for this trip can be bumped up a notch through a hot air balloon ride. Bump up the adrenaline even more and plan to go during the great migration in the dry season where millions of African migratory animals begin the move towards water. Check with a destination specialist to arrange for this experience. Want more adventure? Try a guided camping safari in the bush.

Surf Oahu’s North Shore, Hawaii

Granted, Hawaii isn’t that adventurous but if you’re a surfer; the north shore of Oahu is all the adventure you need.

Climb Mount Everest in Nepal

Ever since it was first conquered by Sir Edmund Hillary, Mount Everest has been attracting adventure seekers to challenge its slopes. I shudder to think what a decent adventure activities insurance policy would cost for this trip.

Swim with Sharks in South Africa

While not that exotic a trip, your first face to face meeting with a 7 metre great white shark is bound to get your adrenaline going.

Zip line in Cebu City, Philippines

Not adventurous you say? This zip line launches from 473 feet atop the Crown Regency Hotel crossing over to an adjacent skyscraper.

Rock Climbing in Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs, Colorado

From the novice to the advanced rock climber, Garden of the Gods in Albuquerque offers a suitable challenge for every level. Need more adventure? Colorado offers some of the finest skiing in the United States.
